Local Transportation, Law Enforcement Partners to Recognize National Stop On Red Week
Communities throughout the country unite to STOP red-light running
Created by the Federal Highway Administration, National Stop on Red Week aims to educate drivers about the dangers of red-light running and to help reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes. The National Coalition for Safer Roadstakes the lead each year to highlight the tools and resources needed to take actions supporting an end to road violence. "Every day, people die needlessly due to preventable traffic fatalities," stated National Coalition for Safer Roads President, Melissa Wandall. "These tragedies are our collective failure in prioritizing speed and convenience over human life. Safety for all road users must be the top priority for all individuals, policymakers, and communities to build a future of zero transportation deaths."
The SCTPO and Titusville Police Department are encouraging motorists to spread the message during National Stop on Red Week. By promoting #StopOnRed2022, where drivers promise to follow the rules of the road and always stop on red.
“Red-light running causes countless injuries and fatalities every year, with a large number of those deaths being innocent pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers in vehicles hit by the red-light runner,” said SCTPO Executive Director, Georganna Gillette. “We are joining forces with our local and national partners to help prevent these deaths.”
"Titusville Police Department takes a highly proactive effort in traffic safety and enforcement by providing the citizens and visitors with high visibility traffic enforcement and educational campaigns," stated Titusville Police Lieutenant Tyler Wright. "We're honored to work with our partners to raise awareness about the dangers of red light running. One lapse in behavior can lead to a catastrophic, life-changing event for all parties involved. ALWAYS stop on red."
