Brevard Regional Transportation Management Center Groundbreaking Marks Major Milestone for Local Transportation Leaders

BREVARD COUNTY, FLA. –State, regional, and local leaders gathered Friday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Brevard Regional Transportation Management Center (BRTMC), a first-of-its-kind facility on the Space Coast that will serve as the hub for real-time traffic operations, incident management, and interagency coordination across Brevard County.

Located right off the Pineda Causeway, the 22,402-square-foot, purpose-built and hardened facility represents the culmination of more than two decades of regional planning and collaboration. Once complete, the BRTMC will enhance roadway safety, improve mobility for residents, visitors, and the region’s growing workforce, as well as provide the platform to support future 24/7 transportation operations.

“This project represents the moment when years of planning, coordination, and prioritization turn into something real,” said Georganna Gillette, Executive Director of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO). “The Transportation Management Center is a direct result of strong partnerships, shared investment, and a commitment to advancing transportation together.”

The BRTMC was first envisioned through regional planning efforts more than 20 years ago and formally included in the SCTPO’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Master Plan in 2015. The project moved from planning to construction through close coordination among the SCTPO, Brevard County, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

“From FDOT’s perspective, this Transportation Management Center represents exactly how transportation should move forward — through collaboration, coordination, and shared goals,” said FDOT District Five Secretary John Tyler, P.E. “By bringing agencies together under one operational hub, we’re strengthening communication, improving real-time incident response, and supporting safer travel throughout the region.”

Brevard County leaders emphasized the facility’s importance to both daily travel and major regional events, such as space launches.

“This Transportation Management Center is an important investment not just in infrastructure, but in how we serve our residents and the many visitors who travel through our community,” said Brevard County Manager, Jim Liesenfelt. “Transportation challenges don’t stop at jurisdictional lines, and this facility allows agencies to work together more effectively and respond more quickly when it matters most.”

From an operational standpoint, the BRTMC will help centralize traffic monitoring, signal operations, and incident management, using advanced cameras, sensors, and intelligent transportation systems.

“This facility will become a coordination hub allowing Brevard County’s Traffic Operations staff to work side-by-side with emergency management and partner with FDOT and all local Public Works/Traffic agencies for shared situational awareness for traffic operations in Brevard County,” said Marc Bernath, Brevard County Public Works Director. “Whether it’s day-to-day traffic management, major events, emergencies, or evacuations, this center will strengthen our ability to respond and prepares us not just for today, but for the future.”

The ceremony also recognized the long-term vision and leadership that helped bring the project to fruition.

“The idea for a Transportation Management Center in Brevard County began years ago with a simple goal — to better coordinate how we manage our transportation system and serve the public,” said John Denninghoff, retired Assistant County Manager of Brevard County. “Seeing this project move from concept to construction is a testament to persistence, partnership, and long-term thinking.”

The BRTMC project is funded through a combination of state, federal, and local transportation funds, including $16.2 million for construction shared equally by FDOT and Brevard County, and $900,000 in design funding provided by the SCTPO. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
