Local Transportation and Safety Officials to Raise Awareness During National Stop on Red Week

BREVARD COUNTY, FL – The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO), National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR), Florida Department of Transportation District Five, and the West Melbourne Police Department are taking a stand against red-light running by promoting safe driving habits during National Stop on Red Week, from August 3-9, 2025.

Created by the Federal Highway Administration and spearheaded by the National Coalition for Safer Roads, National Stop on Red Week aims to educate drivers about the dangers of red-light running and to help reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes.

"Everyday people die or are seriously injured in preventable traffic crashes, and this is unacceptable," said NCSR President, Melissa Wandall. "These tragedies reflect a collective failure to prioritize human life over speed and convenience. We must commit as individuals, as policymakers, and as communities to making safety our highest priority to build a future where zero traffic deaths are not just a goal, but a reality."

To raise awareness, the SCTPO is teaming up with NCSR, FDOT District Five, and the West Melbourne Police Department for a sign-waving pop-up event on Friday, August 8th, targeting rush hour traffic from8:30 – 10:30 am at the Evans Rd. & Hollywood Blvd. & US 192 intersection in West Melbourne. The event precedes the first week of school, making it the opportune time to remind drivers of the importance of ALWAYS stopping on red.

This event reflects our region’s ongoing commitment to Vision Zero, the goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by elevating conversations around personal responsibility and community action.

“During Stop on Red Week, the West Melbourne Police Department is intensifying our efforts to ensure traffic safety by proactively enforcing red light violations while also raising awareness of the critical importance of this issue,” said Chief of Police Greg Vesta. “Every driver can do this simple act to prevent accidents and save lives. Our officers are vigilant in addressing violations and educating the community to promote safer roads for everyone.”

“In recent years, crashes caused by red light running have taken a heartbreaking toll on our communities. Behind every statistic is a life lost, a family shattered, and a reminder that these tragedies are preventable,” said Georganna Gillette, Executive Director of the Space Coast TPO.

“Stopping at a red light might seem routine, but it’s a simple, powerful act that protects everyone on the road. We’re calling on all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and commit to safer habits. Together, we can shift the culture and turn everyday driving decisions into life-saving choices."
