BREVARD COUNTY, FL –From August 4 - 10, 2024, the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization(SCTPO) will join forces with local law enforcement, community organizations, and traffic safety advocates to promote safer driving behaviors throughout the region during National Stop on Red Week.
Created by the Federal Highway Administration and spearheaded by the National Coalition for Safer Roads, National Stop on Red Week is a nationwide initiative dedicated to increasing awareness about the critical importance of obeying traffic signals and reducing red-light running crashes.
“In 2022, 96 people were killed, and an estimated 728 people were seriously injured in crashes that involved red-light running in Florida," said SCTPO Executive Director, Georganna Gillette.
"This is not just a statistic; it represents the loss of precious lives, and loved ones, and the devastating impact it has on families and communities. We cannot stand idly by and watch as this tragic trend continues. Stop on Red Week provides an important opportunity to reinforce the message that obeying traffic signals is essential for preventing crashes and saving lives."
Throughout Stop on Red Week, the SCTPO is excited to introduce its comprehensive 2024 Stop on Red Week Toolkit, designed to support local communities and agencies in promoting traffic safety. This toolkit is a key resource for raising awareness and includes:
- Digital/Social Media Resources: Ready-to-use graphics, and suggested ways to help spread the word online and engage with the community.
- Media Coverage Tips: Best practices for engaging with local media, including ideas, data guidelines, and strategies for effective media pitching.
- Safety for Kids Information: Specialized materials focused on engaging children and parents about the importance of following traffic signals and recognizing traffic signals from a young age.
By providing these community resources, the SCTPO aims to remind all drivers to ALWAYS STOP on RED. Safety is the responsibility of every driver on the road – not just during Stop on Red Week, but every day and every time someone gets behind the wheel.
