Big Changes to FDOT Tentative 5 Year Work Program
Each year the Space Coast TPO provides a list of priority projects to the FDOT to consider for funding in their Tentative 5 year Work Program. These projects get added in during the 5th year of the program. The projects already chosen in the first 4 years of the program remain the same. When the 5th year projects are selected the current year projects are no longer included.
TPO staff has learned that FDOT District Five has decided to fund only two (2) projects in the 5th year of program cycle (Fiscal Year 2017). They are the Wekiva Parkway and the addition of toll lanes for I-4. No other projects will be considered for any of the 9 counties covered by District Five.
FDOT will be holding its Tentative 5 Year Work Program public hearing in conjunction with the Space Coast TPO’s October 13th monthly meeting at which time possible impacts to current and future projects in the work program as well as the TPO’s SU funds (approximately $6 million in FY 2017) will be discussed.
FDOT will hold its district wide Tentative 5 Year Work Program public hearing in Deland on October 25th, 2011 at 6:00 pm, at 719 S. Woodland Blvd, in the Cypress A & B conference rooms. All comments regarding the Tentative 5 Year Work Program will be received until November 7, 2011 at 5:00 pm, and may be sent to District 5 Secretary Noranne Downs at the above address or by email at noranne.downs@dot.state.fl.us
Intelligent Traffic Systems Expanding
The Space Coast TPO has voted to provide funding on an annual basis to support the County’s main ATMS facility as well as provide funds to implement the expansion of ITS projects throughout the County. ITS provides a cost effective way to improve a roads efficiency in a short period of time and with little interruption to daily traffic operations. The system monitors traffic at intersections and is able to adjust the traffic light timing to elevate congestion. For further information and a list of upcoming projects please see the recent article in Florida Today.

NHTSA and Chuggington Partner on National Kids Safety Campaign
Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe! is a new child transportation safety campaign from NHTSA and Ludorum, the producers of the Chuggington™television series. The campaign provides you tools to help your child walk and ride more safely.
Traffic incidents continue to be a leading cause of injury and death for children. Research shows the key to traffic safety is education. Understanding that young children learn best when engaged, Chuggington and NHTSA have partnered to create an interactive traffic safety campaign that delivers life-saving lessons to kids preschool-aged to 3rd grade, all hosted by the "trainees" of Chuggington, Wilson, Koko and Brewster! Lessons focus on four main areas: pedestrian, bus, bike, and car seat safety.
The program includes a fun and informative Chuggington traffic safety website, topic-specific safety tip sheets, downloadable safety activity materials and more.
